Lawmakers: Every agency needs a chief data officer

Julie Spitzer -

Lawmakers are pushing federal agencies to establish policies that would drive better use of data, including requiring a chief data officer at every department, in newly drafted bills, according to FedScoop.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., introduced identical versions of the Foundations for Evidence-based Policymaking Act in the House and Senate. The bills propose requiring each federal agency submit an evidence-building plan and promote data availability while still maintaining privacy standards.

The bills also propose creating a committee on data for evidence building, adding a chief evaluation officer and chief data officer role at each federal agency, and requiring agencies establish data inventories.

"As lawmakers, we have to change our approach not only to how we make policy, but how we gauge its results," Mr. Ryan said. "Ensuring our programs work is just common sense — and what American taxpayers deserve."
