Humber River Hospital opens 1st hospital 'command center' in Canada

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Toronto-based Humber River Hospital opened a command center Nov. 30, which officials claim is the first hospital command center in Canada.

The command center, built in collaboration with GE Healthcare Partners, aims to improve capacity, quality and safety metrics with technological innovations, such as the facility's "wall of analytics." The analytics feature displays real-time and predictive insights related to hospital functions like patient discharges and transfers.

"Whether it be the flu season that brings with it an influx of patients to the emergency department every year, or the fact that Canada has an aging and growing population, there are always pressures, both expected and unexpected, in acute care hospitals," said Barbara Collins, RN, president and CEO of Humber River Hospital. "The digital transformation and command center are focal points of our strategy to deal with these pressures."
