Humana turns to big data in value-based initiative with Amgen

Julie Spitzer -

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana has partnered with Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based biotechnology company Amgen to improve its insurance customers' health outcomes with data analytics research.

Humana and Amgen have planned six initial projects for the collaboration, although they expect to add more over the term of the agreement. The partnership's goal is to harness real-world data from Humana's 13 million members to deliver enhanced quality of care while driving healthcare costs down.

The initial projects will target serious conditions like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and neurologic disorders, among others, by combining information from existing data sources with data from wearable technologies and digital health apps. Through these projects, researchers may develop predictive algorithms that foster early intervention and help to avoid adverse patient outcomes.

"It is our hope that this collaboration with Humana, a first of its kind for Amgen, will cultivate value-based, integrated approaches to care that will focus on patients and benefit the healthcare system more broadly," said Joshua Ofman, MD, senior vice president of global value, access and policy at Amgen.
