The FDA on Jan. 8 cleared Excel Medical's patient surveillance and predictive algorithm system.

Here are three things to know.

1. The Wave Clinical Platform monitors patient vital signs and displays real-time clinical data across hospital work stations, mobile devices and EHRs.

2. The platform also calculates risk to predict sudden patient deaths, sending alerts about heart attacks or respiratory failure up to six hours before a patient experiences such an event.

  1. The approval makes the platform's Visensia Safety Index the first predictive algorithm cleared to predict sudden patient deaths.
