DNA sequencing company offers customers $1M guarantee on ransomware protection

LifeOmic issued what the company officials are calling a "first-of-its kind" guarantee to protect customer data, the Indianapolis-based precision medicine company announced Nov. 28.

LifeOmic offers DNA sequencing and data analytics services through a cloud-based platform. As part of its guarantee that customer data stored on the platform is protected from cyberattacks, LifeOmic officials said the company will reimburse up to $1 million per customer for some data losses following unauthorized account activity, such as ransomware attacks.

Although all LifeOmic customers are eligible for coverage under the guarantee, officials emphasized customers are also required to adopt the company's data protection security practices. However, if a customer's data becomes unrecoverable or compromised through a security breach that is "no fault of their own," LifeOmic officials said the company will take responsibility for financial reimbursements.

"It's clear that patient data is extremely vulnerable," said LifeOmic Founder and CEO Don Brown, MD. "LifeOmic is raising the bar — health data must be ultra-secure, and our cloud platform was specifically designed from the ground up to meet modern cybersecurity needs and be protected from whatever virus, malware or hacker might come for it."
