Texas lab alerts 16,000 patients of data breach

Mackenzie Garrity -

San Antonio-based South Texas Dermatopathology has notified 15,982 patients that their information may have been exposed in a data breach at a third-party collections company.

Billing and collections vendor American Medical Collection Agency alerted South Texas in May that patients' information may have been compromised after a security incident. An AMCA database that contained some South Texas patient information was affected.

Patient data that may have been exposed included names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, dates of service, balance information, credit card or banking information and treatment provider information. No Social Security numbers were affected.

Since the incident, South Texas has stopped doing business with AMCA.

The lab submitted the data breach to HHS' Office for Civil Rights on Oct. 7.
