Texas children's healthcare provider alerts patients of ransomware attack

McKinney, Texas-based Children's Choice Pediatrics began notifying patients Jan. 7 of a ransomware attack that may have exposed their protected health information.

In October, Children's Choice Pediatrics' data was encrypted. After working with cybersecurity experts, the healthcare provider was able to restore some encrypted data. However, a limited number of patient records could not be restored.

According to data from HHS' Office of Civil Rights, 12,689 patients may have been affected. Children's Choice Pediatrics said there is no evidence that patient information has been misused.

Since the incident, Children's Choice Pediatrics has strengthened security measures to ensure its networks are secure.
