Olympics confirm opening ceremonies cyberattack

Julie Spitzer -

The organizers of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, confirmed Sunday a cyberattack occurred during this year's opening ceremonies, which took place Feb. 9, according to Reuters.

The Games' systems, which include internet and television services, were affected by a hack, but organizers said it did not compromise any critical part of their operations. They have not yet disclosed the source of the attack.

"Maintaining secure operations is our purpose," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told Reuters. "We are not going to comment on the issue. It is one we are dealing with. We are making sure our systems are secure and they are secure."

This winter's Olympics are being held only 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the country's border with North Korea, which is technically still at war with the South. The two settled on a truce to end the 1950-53 war, rather than a peace treaty. However, "all issues were resolved and recovered" the morning before the games began, Pyeongchang organizing committee spokesman Sung Baik-you told Reuters.
