New City, N.Y.-based Jawonio, a provider of lifespan disability services, began notifying 13,313 patients that their data has been exposed in an email hacking incident.
Four things to know:
- On April 20, 2020, the New York provider became aware of a data breach in its email environment, according to a June 7 news release.
- An investigation concluded in November and found patients' protected health information had been exposed. Breached data includes Social Security numbers, financial account information, birthdates and medical data.
- "The privacy and protection of personal and protected health information is a top priority for Jawonio, and Jawonio deeply regrets any concern or inconvenience this issue may have caused and is taking affirmative steps to prevent a similar event from occurring in the future," the news release said.
- The organization is unaware of any misuse of stolen data, but it is providing affected patients with credit monitoring.
