New York healthcare provider's email hacked, exposing 13,000 patients

Hannah Mitchell -

New City, N.Y.-based Jawonio, a provider of lifespan disability services, began notifying 13,313 patients that their data has been exposed in an email hacking incident.

Four things to know:

  1. On April 20, 2020, the New York provider became aware of a data breach in its email environment, according to a June 7 news release.

  2. An investigation concluded in November and found patients' protected health information had been exposed. Breached data includes Social Security numbers, financial account information, birthdates and medical data.

  3. "The privacy and protection of personal and protected health information is a top priority for Jawonio, and Jawonio deeply regrets any concern or inconvenience this issue may have caused and is taking affirmative steps to prevent a similar event from occurring in the future," the news release said.

  4. The organization is unaware of any misuse of stolen data, but it is providing affected patients with credit monitoring.
