Nearly 80% of healthcare managers have accidentally emailed sensitive, confidential info

Though the rise in cybersecurity incidents has created an increased push for hospitals to be more vigilant, clinicians and executives continue to fall into cybersecurity traps.

In the 2019 The Security of Confidential Documents in the Workplace Report commissioned by Shred-it and conducted by Ponemon Institute, executives revealed mistakes they make that may contribute to data breaches.

Below are five key things to know:

1. Around eight in 10 healthcare managers reported that they have accidentally sent an email that contained sensitive or confidential information to the wrong person.

2. Sixty-seven percent of healthcare executives indicated that they are not confident in their organization's ability to govern the use, protection and disposal of paper documents.

3. Majority of healthcare managers (70 percent) have picked up or seen a paper document in a public space that held sensitive or confidential information. Only 36 percent shred confidential paper documents after reviewing them.

4. More than 60 percent of healthcare managers are concerned that employees or contractors have printed and left behind documents that could lead to data breaches.

5. Seventy-one percent of healthcare data breaches in the last year involved the loss or theft of paper documents or electronic devices.
