Microsoft rolls out restore function to ease ransomware recovery

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Microsoft released two protection capabilities for Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal subscribers April 5, Corporate Vice President for Office Kirk Koenigsbauer wrote in a company blog post.

The capabilities, dubbed "Files Restore" and "Ransomware detection & recovery," aim to ease users' recovery from malicious cyberattacks, such as ransomware.

The Files Restore capability builds on a feature developed for OneDrive for Business. With the expansion to Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal, users who face an accidental deletion, file corruption or cyberattack are able to restore their work and personal files housed in OneDrive to a previous point in time within the last 30 days.

The Ransomware detection & recovery capability detects ransomware attacks within Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal to help users restore their OneDrive to a point before files were compromised. If the feature detects a ransomware attack, it alerts the user via email, mobile or desktop notification and guides them through a recovery process within Files Restore.
