McAfee: 5 cybersecurity trends to watch in 2018

Jessica Kim Cohen -

McAfee, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based cybersecurity company, released its "McAfee Labs 2018 Threats Predictions Report" Nov. 29.

The report — composed by the company's threat research division, McAfee Labs — identified five key cybersecurity trends business leaders should watch for in 2018.

Here are the five trends outlined in the report.

1. A machine learning "arms race" will develop between cyberattackers and cyberdefenders.

2. Ransomware will pivot away from traditional extortion and onto new targets, technologies and objectives, including high net-worth individuals, connected devices and businesses.

3. Organizations will increase their vulnerability by implementing serverless apps, which — despite their benefits — are susceptible to attacks on data moving across a network.

4. Connected home device manufacturers and service providers will seek to improve their profit margins by gathering more personal data, turning the home into a "corporate store front."

5. Businesses will increasingly collect children's digital content, opening themselves up to long-term reputation risks.
