Louisiana physicians' network Imperial Health has alerted more than 116,000 patients of a ransomware attack that may have compromised their personal information, according to the HIPAA Journal.

Imperial Health became aware May 19 that an unauthorized third-party had downloaded ransomware onto its network. The ransomware encrypted files and databases at Imperial Health's Center for Orthopaedics.

Information that may have been compromised included names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, diagnoses, treatment information, medications, dates of service, treating physicians and other clinical information.

Imperial Health is unaware of any data misuse. Since the incident, the physician network has removed the ransomware from its network and restored data.
