If you can't beat hackers, why not hire them?

Hackers are viewed as malicious actors whose data breaches have the potential to seriously harm patients and halt hospital operations. But what if they were on our side?

Matthew Cornelius, the executive director of Alliance for Digital Innovation and former senior technology and cybersecurity adviser at the Office of Management and Budget, said companies can staff "white-hat" hackers to test a security system's vulnerabilities, according to a May 13 article published by Federal News Network.

Cyberattackers are growing more sophisticated as ransomware attacks allow cybergangs to reinvest into their operations. Allowing white-hat cyberattackers, who are ethical computer hackers who specialize in penetration testing, to find vulnerabilities can assist the company in mediating and understanding the vulnerabilities.

"You have new people taking a look at a system, or website, or the software in a different way; you're essentially sort of crowd testing how that works," Mr. Cornelius said.

Investing in cybersecurity and securing your organization from cyberattackers is essential in gaining the trust of your consumers.

"No one's going to want to give their information to the government or to sign up for a program or benefit or service on a federal website if they don't feel that their information is going to be secure," he said.
