HHS investigating Tallahassee hospital IT breach

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights said it has launched an investigation into a February IT security incident that occurred at Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial HealthCare, WTXL Tallahassee reported April 10. 

The HHS cybersecurity database reported that 20,376 patients' protected health information was compromised due to the breach that was first detected on Feb. 3.  

Social Security numbers, some treatment information, dates of birth, health insurance information, medical record numbers and patient account numbers were among the following compromised. 

A spokesperson for the health system told the publication it was unable to comment on the investigation due to its "confidential nature."

This comes shortly after Moody's said the February IT security event would be considered "credit negative."
