Hackers gain access to 3,700 patient records at Texas hospital

Greenville, Texas-based Hunt Memorial Hospital District has notified 3,700 patients that their medical records may have been exposed due to a criminal cyberattack.

Hunt discovered May 14 that it had been the victim of a data breach. Upon investigation, the hospital learned hackers had gained access to information within its computer network.

Hackers had access to patients' medical records, which included Social Security numbers and other protected health information. Hunt is unaware of any data misuse since the data breach.

Patients who were affected by the data breach can receive identity theft protection. Hunt is working with the FBI to further investigate the incident.

"Though a variety of administrative, physical and technical security measurers were in place prior to the incident, Hunt has also retained the services of cyber security professionals to further investigate this incident and aid Hunt in implementing additional safeguards to strengthen data security within Hunt's computer environment," the hospital said in a July 12 statement.
