Government entities see insider threat as No. 1 cybersecurity concern

Julie Spitzer -

All government entities surveyed see their own employees as the biggest threat to IT security, according to a report from security firm Netwrix.

The "2017 IT Risks Report" surveyed 723 organizations across more than 30 industries — including government, healthcare and IT — on their perceptions of IT risk.

Here are four report insights.

1. Sixty-five percent of respondents said their organization faced at least one security incident in 2016. The two most common incidents were malware (43 percent) and human error (41 percent). Only 12 percent of organizations said these incidents resulted in a data breach.

2. Eighty-five percent of organizations have at least some controls over user activity, data access and IT changes, but only 55 percent consider their organization's IT controls adequate.

3. Sixty-five percent of respondents said their organization does not have dedicated personnel responsible for cybersecurity.

4. Of the organizations that are required to comply with a cybersecurity standard, such as HIPAA, 48 percent struggle to ensure continuous compliance and provide evidence to auditors.
