A data breach at a healthcare billing and administrative service provider exposed the personal and medical information of an unknown number of Michigan residents, according to The Detroit News.
Puerto Rico-based Inmediata Health Group became aware of a security incident in January that made patients' electronic health information viewable online "due to a webpage setting that permitted search engines to index internal webpages that are used for business operations."
The data breach exposed patients' addresses and Social Security numbers along with other personal health information.
The billing provider immediately shutdown the website and contacted an independent digital forensic firm to investigate. There has been no discovery of misuse.
Inmediata Health Group began sending letters to affected patients last month. Those who were affected are recommended to closely monitor their financial accounts.
