Cyberattacks against medical, healthcare professionals persist, says Google

Google's Threat Analysis Group reported hundreds of targeted or government-backed groups are launching cyberattacks, with some focused on healthcare organizations.

Three things to know:

1. The group reported 270 targeted or government-backed attacker groups from more than 50 countries have launched phishing campaigns and other hacking incidents against Google, its products and users. The company sent 1,755 warnings to users who were targeted in government-backed attacks in April.

2. There were continued attacks on medical and healthcare professionals in addition to World Health Organization employees from groups including Charming Kitten.

3. Google is seeing an increase in COVID-19-related hacking and phishing attempts from commercial and government-backed attackers. There are some "hack-for-hire" firms that have created Gmail accounts to spoof WHO, largely targeting healthcare corporations, financial services and consulting leaders.
