Boards' interest in improving cybersecurity rises 23% since 2017, survey finds

Almost half of CIOs — 49 percent — indicate improving cybersecurity is a key business issue their respective organizations' boards are looking to address with IT initiatives, according to a joint survey by IT outsourcing service provider Harvey Nash and professional services firm KPMG.

For the IT leadership survey, Harvey Nash and KPMG asked nearly 4,000 CIOs and technology leaders across 84 countries about their attitudes toward various aspects of their careers, including budget, technology and workforce priorities.

Here are five of the top business issues various company boards are looking to IT to address, ranked by percent increase since 2017:

1. Improving cybersecurity (49 percent of CIOs cited this as a key business issue among boards in 2018): Up 23 percent since 2017

2. Managing operational risk and compliance (38 percent): 12 percent

3. Improving business processes (62 percent): 5 percent

4. Developing innovative new products and services (53 percent): 4 percent

5. Delivering business intelligence/analytics (48 percent): 4 percent
