1. MD Anderson slapped with $4.3M penalty for HIPAA violations

An HHS administrative law judge upheld an HHS Office for Civil Rights finding requiring the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to pay $4,348,000 in civil penalties for HIPAA violations related to the organization's encryption policies.

2. Cyberattack forces Indiana hospital to cancel elective surgeries, divert ambulances

Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., canceled all remaining elective surgeries around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 after its IT team discovered a computer virus.

3. Allscripts investigating ransomware incident, some services unavailable to customers

Allscripts investigated a ransomware attack that impacted a limited number of its applications in January, such as regulatory reporting, clinical decision support and direct messaging services.

4. Anthem's $16M HIPAA settlement largest in history

Anthem agreed to pay HHS $16 million to settle potential HIPAA violations related to cyberattacks that compromised the health information of nearly 79 million people in 2015.
