5 hospitals, health systems facing lawsuits after cyberattacks

Along with the uptick in cybersecurity incidents at hospitals and health systems, patients have begun to take action in response to their data potentially being mishandled. 

Below are five hospitals that are currently facing lawsuits filed by patients after cyberattacks. 

1. Patients of Georgetown, S.C.-based Tidelands Health have filed a class-action lawsuit claiming the health system failed to protect their personal health information following a malware attack. 

2. A patient of Health Quest is suing the Lagrangeville, N.Y.-based health system for allegedly failing to safeguard her protected health information after it was exposed in a phishing attack. 

3. Patients of Kalispell (Mont.) Regional Healthcare filed a second lawsuit Dec. 24 against the health system after their protected health information was affected in a data breach. One of the 130,000 patients who may have been affected by a data breach at Kalispell Regional filed a lawsuit Nov. 25 against the health system. 

4. Four patients filed a class action lawsuit against Tuscaloosa, Ala.-based DCH Health System, alleging privacy violations and medical care disruption after an October ransomware attack. 

5. Ten patients who were affected by a data breach at Columbia-based University of Missouri Health Care filed a class-action lawsuit Aug. 6 against the university.
