2 MU Health Care employees fall victim to phishing attack

Mackenzie Garrity -

Two employees at Columbia-based University of Missouri Health Care were targets of a phishing attack that gave an unauthorized third-party access to the email accounts between April 23 and May 1, according to the News Tribune.

MU Health Care became aware of the hacking incident on May 1. The university immediately secured the email accounts and started an investigation into the incident.

It is unclear the number of patients that were affected in the breach. Patient information that may have been compromised included names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health insurance information and limited treatment or clinical information.

MU Health Care has notified all affected patients about the incident. Officials say there has been no indication that the information has been misused, reports the News Tribune.

Since the incident, MU Health Care is reinforcing education with employees to identify suspicion emails. The university has also implemented different security enhancements. Officials recommend patients review any statements they receive from their health insurer or healthcare provider.
