14,000 patient files stolen from Mississippi physician practice

Gulfport (Miss.) Anesthesia Services sent letters to 14,000 patients alerting them that their files had gone missing from the practice's storage facility, according to local news station WLOX.

Charles Lobrano, MD, the owner of the practice, said someone broke into the storage facility and stole patient records from 2017-18. While he said he is unclear when the records were stolen, he immediately began notifying staff and identifying the patients affected when he learned of the incident on March 12.

Patient information in the stolen records included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and information on the services received at the practice.

Dr. Lobrano and the practice are unaware of any misuse or attempted misuse from the security breach. He estimates fewer than 100 patient files may have contained any credit card information.

A suspect has been arrested, but no charges have been filed in connection to the stolen files, WLOX reports.
