Signing bonuses are on the rise, as 88 percent of placed physicians received a signing bonus in 2011, according to a report from The Medicus Firm.
This is up from 2010, when 73 percent of physicians received a signing bonus, according to the report. The average signing bonus also topped $20,000 in 2011, consistent with recent trends.
The Medicus Firm, a physician placement group, also spotted the following trends in physician compensation and placement in 2011:
• Relocation allowances increased in 2011, due in part to the housing market crisis and, therefore, a need to lure physicians geographically with a financial incentive.
• Primary care placements are still the highest percentage of total placements at 34 percent. Surgical specialties had the second-highest percentage at 20.9 percent.
• Roughly 83 percent of physician placements were employment agreements with the hospital (as opposed to recruiting agreements in which physicians would receive a forgivable loan to start their own private practice).
