Republican Councilmen Question Salaries, Bonuses at Cleveland's MetroHealth

Councilmen Michael Gallagher and David Greenspan (R-Cuyahoga County) are questioning salaries and bonuses paid to executives of MetroHealth hospital system in Cleveland, according to a Plain Dealer report.

The hospital system paid at least three executive bonuses totaling more than $40,000 last year, according to a document provided by MetroHealth. Sharon Kelley, the system's CFO, received the largest bonus at $81,089. In addition to the bonus, Ms. Kelley earns a $440,000 salary.

Councilmen Gallagher and Greenspan are looking into why the system decided to distribute executive bonuses while laying off hundreds of employees. Councilman Gallagher requested pay information from the hospital and received a 32-page list of salaries and bonuses, according to the report.

While MetroHealth paid bonuses to hundreds of employees in 2010, the seven administrators were the only employees to receive five-figure payments. According to the report, Democrats on the county council have made it clear they are not on board with the Republicans' inquiry.
