CEOs at the largest and most profitable children's hospitals have some of the highest compensation packages in the hospital sector, as most make more than $1 million in salary and benefits annually, according to a Kaiser Health News/Bellingham Herald report.
In 2009, CEO compensation at the 25 largest independent children's hospitals ranged from a low of $686,125 to a high of roughly $6 million, according to the report. In total, 22 of the 25 CEOs made more than $1 million and collected a total of $38 million, including deferred income and retirement benefits.
The following are some of the individual compensation figures of children's hospital CEOs from 2009:
• Steven Altschuler, CEO of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, made roughly $2 million in salary and benefits.
• William Considine, CEO of Akron (Ohio) Children's Hospital, took home $5.1 million, including a payout of roughly $4 million. The hospital also provided Mr. Considine with a country club membership and a car.
• Christopher Durovich, CEO of Children's Medical Center of Dallas, earned $2.8 million, with $1.29 million of that in deferred income.
• Randall O'Donnell, CEO of Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo., was the highest-compensated executive at roughly $5.99 million, including a $4.1 million payout.
