Highest-Earning Physicians Found in North Central Region of U.S.

Of the nine different geographic areas in the United States, annual median physician compensation was the highest in the North Central so far in 2011 at roughly $225,000, according to Medscape's 2011 Physician Compensation Survey.

The North Central region consists of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Missouri. Here are the average annual compensation figures of all nine geographic regions:

•    North Central:  $225,000
•    South Central:  $216,000
•    Southeast:  $210,000
•    Great Lakes:  $201,500
•    Northwest:  $200,000
•    West:  $200,000
•    Mid-Atlantic:  $195,000
•    Northeast:  $190,000
•    Southwest:  $190,000
