Executives, Nurses at California's Sutter Health Earn High Pay

More than 23,000 nurses at Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health hospitals in Northern and Central California organized a one-day strike last September over contract negotiations; yet an investigation of records by the San Francisco Chronicle shows both nurses and executives at Sutter Health received high salaries in 2009 and 2010, according to the report.

Roughly 20 nurses at Alta Bates Summit Medical Centers in Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., earned between $200,000 and $291,000 last year, according to the report. Of the highest-paid nurses, five received more than $100,000 each to be on call.

Twenty of the top executives at Sutter Health received significantly higher salaries, earning more than $1 million each in 2009. According to the report, CEO Pat Fry topped the list at roughly $4 million in total compensation.

However, the nurses' union said the strike was not about their wages — it was about their benefits and cuts in patient services, the report said.
