Emergency Medicine Physicians Make Almost $240k Per Year on Average

Full-time emergency medicine physicians, a majority who are employed by hospitals, earn an average of $239,758 per year, according to the 2011 LocumTenens.com Emergency Medicine Salary Survey (pdf).

Other results from the survey include the following:

•    Emergency medicine physicians that owned or were a partner of a practice or group ($278,750) made 20 percent more than those who were salaried employees ($232,036) in 2011.
•    Emergency medicine physicians with six to 12 years of experience had the highest salaries, as they earned nearly $325,000 per year on average.
•    Emergency medicine physicians with more than 30 years of experience had the lowest salaries, earning less than $200,000 per year on average.
•    Of the 38 percent of respondents who knew precise Medicare reimbursements, roughly 47 percent reported Medicare reimburses less than their cost for the encounter, while 37 percent said Medicare reimburses enough to break even.
