Chief marketing executives increasingly among 5 top paid employees: 4 things to know

Megan Knowles -

It is not uncommon for a chief marketing executive to be one of the five highest earners at a public company, according to a new study from Equilar.

The study examined proxy statements from all U.S.-based or listed public companies with more than $500 million in revenue from fiscal years 2012-16.

Here are four things to know about Equilar's findings:

1. CMOs or other top marketing executives in the highest-paid positions increased 157 percent, with 190 named in the top five, in four years.

2. Representation of women in top marketing roles increased from 10.8 percent to 18.4 percent.

3. By 2017, compensation for women in chief marketing roles nearly doubled, while total pay for men increased 9.4 percent.

4. The two highest paid marketing executives are from Charter Communications and Dell Technologies, respectively.
