Beaumont workers to rally over CEO's compensation

Emily Rappleye -

Union workers from Southfield, Mich.-based Beaumont Health system plan to rally July 17 after learning their CEO earned an 82 percent compensation increase in 2017, the Detroit Free Press reports.

SEIU Healthcare, a healthcare union, estimates 1,000 caregivers from Beaumont hospitals in Taylor, Trenton and Wayne, Mich., will gather at Beaumont Hospital Wayne for the rally, according to the report.

Staffers were upset to find Beaumont CEO John Fox earned $5.6 million in 2017, while some employees made only $9.45 an hour and "are struggling to just make ends meet," a certified nursing assistant told the Detroit Free Press.

Beaumont issued a statement to the Detroit Free Press standing by its compensation package for Mr. Fox. "Beaumont believes John Fox's compensation as president and CEO is reasonable based on a rigorous methodology including a review of market data, assessment of job responsibilities and evaluation of qualifications," the statement reads. The system also noted Mr. Fox's compensation is partially performance-based.
