10 metro areas where physicians saw greatest growth in pay

Megan Knowles -

Physician compensation increased 5.1 percent on average nationwide in 2017, yet a few major metropolitan areas saw upticks as great as 16 percent, according to research compiled by Doximity.

The study gathered data from 12,000 physician jobs posted in 2016 and 2017 on Doximity, the largest social network for physicians and advanced practice clinicians.

Doximity analyzed data on 20 metropolitan statistical areas and 15 medical specialties based on the number of job postings on the network in 2016.

To determine compensation growth, Doximity used its network's self-reported compensation surveys of about 40,000 full-time, licensed U.S. physicians who practiced at least 40 hours per week between 2016 and 2017.

Here are the 10 metro areas where physicians saw the highest pay raises, with compensation growth by percentage.

1. San Francisco (16 percent increase)
2. Indianapolis (14 percent increase)
3. Los Angeles (13 percent increase)
4. Philadelphia (11 percent increase)
5. Milwaukee (10 percent increase)
6. New York City (8 percent increase)
7. Minneapolis (8 percent increase)
8. Pittsburgh (8 percent increase)
9. Seattle (7 percent increase)
10. Boston (7 percent increase)
