Indiana is the highest earning state for physicians, with physicians earning $334,000 in annual compensation on average, according to Medscape's annual Physician Compensation Report.

In an online survey, Medscape gathered data from more than 20,000 U.S. physicians across 29 specialties to assess compensation, hours worked, time spent with patients and more. Respondents were required to be currently practicing physicians in the U.S.

Here are the 10 highest earning states for physicians overall.

1. Indiana: $334,000
2. Oklahoma: $330,000
3. Connecticut: $329,000
4. Wisconsin: $327,000
5. Nevada: $323,000
6. Arkansas: $318,000
7. Louisiana: $314,000
8. Alabama: $313,000
9. Kentucky: $312,000
10. Florida: $310,000

Here are the six lowest earning states for physicians overall.

1. Michigan: $277,000
2. Massachusetts: $275,000
3. Hawaii: $268,000
4. New Mexico: $261,000
5. Maryland: $256,000
6. District of Columbia: $229,000
