New e-cigarette policy coming soon, FDA says

Maia Anderson -

The FDA's acting commissioner, Ned Sharpless, MD, said the agency expects to finalize a policy on flavored e-cigarettes and vaping products in the coming weeks, according to CNN.

The policy, first introduced Sept. 11, would require all flavors of e-cigarettes besides tobacco to be removed from the market to get "premarket authorization" before being allowed to return.

"This policy would prioritize FDA's enforcement of premarket authorization requirements for non-tobacco flavors," Dr. Sharpless said in his testimony before a House subcommittee.

He clarified that the policy does not mean flavored e-cigarettes will never be allowed to be marketed, but that they will have to meet FDA standards.

Once the policy is finalized, e-cigarette makers will have about 30 days to pull products from the market.
