MetroHealth to bring fresh food, job training, affordable housing to Cleveland community

Cleveland-based MetroHealth has launched an institute to give people in its community access to social services and fresh food and an initiative to offer them affordable housing.

The Institute for Health, Opportunity, Partnership and Empowerment will be housed on MetroHealth's main campus and include an economic opportunity center, where people can receive counseling to help them find jobs and become financially literate. They'll also have access to such amenities as a grocery store with fresh food and a community kitchen.

MetroHealth will partner with Cuyahoga County Community College in Cleveland to establish an access center next year that will focus on training people for jobs in healthcare, public safety, IT and more.

The health system also is partnering with a developer and architect to construct three buildings with 250 apartments on or near its main campus. Seventy-two of the apartments will be available to those who earn 30 percent to 80 percent of the area's median income.

The apartment buildings will house community support programs, such as child care, grocery stores and job training.
