France's first face transplant recipient dies

A French woman who received the one of the world's first partial face transplants has died, according to NBC News.

A statement by the AmiensUniversityHospital in France said 49-year-old Isabelle Dinoire died Sept. 6 after battling a long illness, according to the article. It is unclear whether her death was related to the transplant she received 11 years ago.

Ms. Dinoire received a partial face transplant after being attacked by her pet Labrador. The procedure gave her a new nose, chin and lips. Two French physicians performed the transplant in 2005.
