3 Boston hospitals collaborate to tackle housing instability

Boston Medical Center, Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston are joining forces to support housing stability, investing nearly $3 million via a new initiative.

The Innovative Stable Housing Initiative aims to identify, assess and fund approaches to increase housing stability for people living in the greater Boston area. By helping address housing disparities and housing insecurity, the hospitals hope to improve the health of the population in the area.

"Often, what patients need to become healthy is not medical treatment, but a prescription for the root cause of what is preventing them from getting well, like housing," said Thea James, MD, vice president of mission and associate CMO at Boston Medical Center.

The hospitals have established three funds to improve resident access to stable housing resources to support policy and efforts centered on stable housing; and to engage people of color. They are also partnering with community organizations.
