Hospitals with highest, lowest heart failure readmission ratios

Boise, Idaho-based St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center had the lowest heart failure readmission ratio between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023, according to CMS data published April 30.

As part of its hospital readmissions reduction program, CMS measures excess readmissions for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hip/knee replacement and coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Ratios are calculated by dividing a hospital’s predicted rate of readmissions by the expected rate of readmissions, based on the average rate of hospitals with similar patient populations.

Here are the 10 hospitals with the lowest heart failure readmission ratios:

  1. St. Luke’s Region Medical Center (Boise, Idaho): 0.739

  2. Intermountain Health McKay-Dee Hospital (Ogden, Utah): 0.7605

  3. Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital: 0.7643

  4. Monument Health Rapid City (S.D.) Hospital: 0.7693

  5. Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center (Medford, Ore.): 0.7756

  6. Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah): 0.7903

  7. Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center (Bangor): 0.7921

  8. Ascension Borgess Medical Center (Kalamazoo, Mich.): 0.7986

  9. Health First’s Viera Hospital (Melbourne, Fa.): 0.8061

  10. Bryan Medical Center (Lincoln, Neb.): 0.81
