Mount Sinai to open $300M, seven-story surgical tower in Miami Beach

Leo Vartorella -

Miami Beach, Fla.-based Mount Sinai Medical Center will open its new seven-story Skolnick Surgical Tower and Hildebrandt Emergency Center Feb. 2, according to CBS Miami.

The expansion cost nearly $300 million, and the new 34,000-square-foot emergency room will accommodate 50,000 more patients every year. The surgical tower will feature 154 private patient rooms and 12 integrated operating rooms that will allow communication between a control booth, pathology room and other operating rooms.

The building is made to withstand Category 5 hurricane-force winds and can generate its own power for up to nine days.

"Nobody wants to be here, but if you had to be hospitalized this is the place you want to be," said Steven Sonenreich, CEO of Mount Sinai.
