The expansion is part of the Unbound. portion of Mayo’s Bold. Forward. strategy to “cure, connect and transform healthcare for the benefit of patients everywhere,” according to a March 3 news release from the health system.
The 1.2 million-square-foot project in Arizona includes:

- A five-floor vertical and horizontal expansion of the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building
- Integration of technology
- Eleven new operating rooms
- Two new patient units supporting 48 additional beds
- Enhanced arrival experience for patients and visitors
Plans for the project also include a two-story, indoor promenade as well as the development of care neighborhoods Mayo said “cluster complementary clinical services for a more intuitive and connected patient experience.”
“This incredible investment will forever change the patient and staff experience in Arizona as Mayo Clinic grows and reinvents its nationally recognized clinical care, research and education,” Richard Gray, MD, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, said in the release. “Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Arizona will increase clinical space on the Phoenix campus by nearly 60%, allowing us to care for more patients than ever before.”
Mayo’s Bold. Forward. Unbound. physical plan also includes projects underway in Rochester and in Jacksonville, Fla., and Mayo Clinic Health System‘s recently completed projects in Mankato, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis.
Mayo said an initial design and construction team of McCarthy, Gensler and Arup Group has been formed for the Arizona expansion, which is slated for completion in 2031.
