Mass General $1B expansion: 6 things to know

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital recently announced plans for a $1 billion expansion project, according to Boston.com.

Six things to know:

1. Two 12-story towers totaling over 1 million square-feet are planned.

2. One building will offer 450 private patient rooms along with heart and cancer centers. The expansion will allow the hospital to accomodate 100 to 200 more patients at a time.

3. The top six floors of each tower will house inpatient rooms.  Exam rooms, infusion centers, imaging rooms and retail space will r will occupy the lower floors.

4. Regulatory approval for the project is expected to take 18 months. Construction is set to begin in 2020, finish in 2026 and create roughly 4,500 jobs.

5. Hospital officials say 20 percent to 30 percent of the expansion's cost will be funded through private donations.

6. The expansion will also include a seven-story campus services building with space for utilities and administrative support personnel.
