58 of Puerto Rico's 69 hospitals lack power and fuel: 4 things to know

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico's medical infrastructure, and the effects of the storm are expected to persist for months.

Here are the four things you need to know about the situation in Puerto Rico.

1. Of Puerto Rico's 69 hospitals, 58 were without power and fuel as of Tuesday morning, and the government plans to establish 7 temporary hospitals, according to a FEMA report.

2. Forty-four percent of the island's 3.4 million residents are without potable water, according to the same report.

3. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz (PPD) announced two people on life support in an area hospital died because the hospital ran out of fuel, according to a CBS' David Begnaud.

4. So far, 150 patients have been evacuated to the U.S. for emergency medical attention, but others who do not already have plane tickets will not be able to leave the island until Oct. 4, according to The Atlantic.
