Joint Commission Publishes Report on Updated Patient Flow Standards

The Joint Commission announced the publication of an "R3 Report," which provides the rationale and references for its updated leadership standards that focus on patient flow, particularly in the emergency department.

The report addresses the use of data and metrics to manage patient flow, the safety of care if patient boarding occurs and risk reduction for patients with psychiatric emergencies, according to the release.

The revised standards take effect Jan. 1, 2013, except for Leadership standard LD.04.03.11, elements of performance six and nine, which will be effective Jan. 1, 2014, according to the release.
