Walmart hires former American Express exec as first chief customer officer

Walmart created a chief customer officer role to oversee customer experience online and in its stores, and selected a former American Express executive to pioneer the position, according to Reuters.

Janey Whiteside, who spent two decades at American Express serving in relationship management, marketing and customer engagement roles, will focus on attracting customers to Walmart. She will join the retail giant Aug. 1, according to an employee memo provided to Reuters that was sent by Walmart U.S. Chief Executive Greg Foran and e-commerce chief Marc Lore.

"Janey will play a critical role looking after our brand and thinking through the customer journey — from acquiring new customers to their shopping experience and resolving any issues they may have," according to the memo.

The newly created position comes as companies across the retail industry struggle to reel in shoppers.
