Jeff Bezos establishes $2B fund to support homeless relief, education efforts

Leo Vartorella -

Jeff Bezos has created the Day One Fund with a starting endowment of $2 billion to support nonprofits that help homeless families while also creating a new network of tuition-free preschools in low income areas.

The Day One Families Fund will give annual grants to organizations that address the needs of young homeless families through the mission statement, "no child sleeps outside." The Day One Academies Fund will create an organization that directly operates a network of tier one, Montessori-style schools in underserved communities. These schools will utilize Amazon's trademark customer obsession, treating the students as customers, the company said.

Mr. Bezos crafted the the Day One Fund after calling for suggestions for ways to answer the questions, "Where's the good in the world, and how can we spread it? Where are the opportunities to make things better?"

"I want to close by thanking everyone who sent me suggestions, and for inspiring examples of innovation I see every day, large and small," Mr. Bezos tweeted. "It fills me with gratitude and optimism to be part of a species so bent on self-improvement."
