Are you in the middle class? This new calculator aims to tell you

Ayla Ellison -

A new calculator from the Pew Research Center lets Americans calculate if they are in the lower, middle or upper class.

The interactive tool determines a person's "income tier" using his or her state, metropolitan area, household income before taxes and number of people in the household. To calculate results, Pew used government data as recent as 2016.

Pew's analysis of government data revealed 52 percent of American adults lived in middle-income households in 2016, while 29 percent lived in lower-income households and 19 percent lived in upper-income households.

Find the calculator on the Fact Tank section of Pew's website.
