Amazon enters second phase of HQ2 search

Leo Vartorella -

Amazon has entered the second phase of its search for a city to house its second headquarters, according to CNN.

The second headquarters, dubbed HQ2, is expected to generate nearly 50,000 jobs and cost $5 billion to construct, which is equal to the company's existing headquarters in Seattle. Amazon has narrowed down its list of potential sites from 238 nominees to 20 and is now meeting with officials from the short-listed cities.

While Amazon has yet to meet with representatives from all 20 potential cities,  company representatives met with the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. in late January and recently had dinner with Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington D.C.

Three sites in the Washington D.C. area are under consideration, and many believe the region to be a frontrunner for selection due to personal ties Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has to the city.
