154 CEOs out in August in highest monthly turnover ever

CEOs of U.S.-based companies are leaving at the fastest rate ever recorded, according to a recent analysis from global outplacement consultancy and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The previous record of CEO departures was in September 2006, when the firm tracked 152 CEO changes. In August, 154 CEOs left their positions, which is up 60 percent from the 96 CEO departures that occured in the same month last year. August's CEO departures were 64 percent higher than the 94 CEO exits in July.

Year to date, Challenger, Gray & Christmas has recorded 879 CEO changes, up 15 percent year over year.
