Only 44% of healthcare leaders say employees are prepared for AI adoption: 4 notes

While nearly 40 percent of healthcare industry executives believe the industry is moving too slowly in adopting artificial intelligence, even more say their workforces do not have the skills necessary to facilitate that adoption, according to a new KPMG report.

Here are four takeaways from the healthcare-focused edition of the Living in an AI World 2020 report, which surveyed healthcare leaders about the benefits and challenges of AI adoption.

1. Among the challenges preventing the broader, faster deployment of AI in healthcare is a lack of training. Two-thirds of those surveyed said their employees support AI adoption — the lowest of any industry included in the report — which may be tied to the fact that only 47 percent said their organizations provide AI training courses.

2. Healthcare professionals are also concerned about the effects of the technology on the industry: More than half of respondents believe that AI has increased, rather than mitigated, the costs of healthcare, and 75 percent reported concerns over AI's potential threats to the security and privacy of patient data.

3. Still, many executives remain optimistic about the technology's impact on healthcare. Just under 90 percent of those surveyed said AI is already increasing efficiency in their systems, and even more said it has increased patients' access to care.

4. In terms of clinical applications, AI's greatest impact will likely be seen in improving diagnoses, an area in which 68 percent of respondents expressed confidence in AI's abilities. Another 40 percent expect the technology to improve and automate x-ray and CT scan readings in the near future.
